Fisher King

The Fisher King is one of several characters connected with Arthurian Legend. He is always injured to the lower parts of his body, rendering him incapable of moving on his own, hence additional names have been associated with this Arthurian character such as the Maimed King or the Wounded King. The Fisher King is associated with the Quest for the Holy Grail and was originally introduced in Chrétien de Troyes in Le Conte del Graal.

The evident parallel between C.S. Lewis's That Hideous Strength  main character Mr. Fisher King and the Fisher King from Arthurian Legend is defined through the search for something holy (The Grail). In doing so Mr. Fisher King’s (Ransom/the Director) actions further resemble the attributes associated with Arthurian Legend in where the king must defend the land from evil. Mr. Fisher King does so through the help of Merlin, thus further associating much of the subtext with Arthurian Legend.
