In Arthurian legend, Avalon is a mythical island in Britain. The island appears in many author's accounts of Arthur, but it first appeared in Geoffrey of Monmouth's "Historia Regum Britanniae." It was to Avalon that Arthur was brought after being wounded in a battle with Mordred, and where he may or may not have died (depending on the writer). It was also where the sword Exalibur was forged. The name "Avalon" is thought to be an anglicization of the Celtic word for apple, as the island was also famed for the fruit. There are several theories about the location of Avalon, though one popular legend says that it was located in what is now Glastonbury.

Avalon. A four person christian vocal group that formed in 1996. Their musical goal is to preserve the high quality contemporary christian music of the 60's 70's and 80's. Consisting of four people, Greg, Janna, Jeremi and Melissa, they now tour the country spreading the Gospel word and preserving Christian music.

Greg looks like a douchebag.

Avalon is a full size car, or sedan, made by Toyota in the United States and (until recently) Australia. In 2006, it was replaced by the Aurion in Australia. This car was first manufactured in 1994 (as a '95 model). This vehicle features a six cylinder engine and front wheel drive.

This is a 2006 Toyota Avalon, painted in a classy, sophisticated black.

Avalon in That Hideous Strength

Let's see if I can get this to work.

In Chapter 13.1 "They Have Pulled Down Deep Heaven on Their Heads" Mr. Fisher-King/The Director/The Pendragon/Ransom is asked three questions by a man who we soon learn in Merlin. The second question is:

"Where is the ring of Arthur the King? What Lord has such a treasure in his house?"

To which Ransom replies:

"The ring of the King . . . is on Arthur's finger where he sits in the House of Kings in the cup shaped land of Abhaljin, beyond the seas of Lur in Perelandra. For Arthur did not die; but Our Lord took him, to be the body till the end of time and the shattering of Sulva, with Enoch and Elias and Mosesand Melchisedec the King."

"Abhaljin" is supposed be Avalon. [1]

The Avalon Myth

From Pantheon.org we get some of the best stuff. Geoffry of Monmouth said that Avalon was the magic island Excalibur came from where he went after he was fatally wounded in his last battle. Monmouth calls it Insuls Avallonis, or Isle of Apples. This could be a symbol conected to the Welsh Ynys Avallach. Monmouth compares Avalon to the Fortunate Isles of classical myth. It is presided over by Morgan le Fay, who lead a sisterhood of nine. It is similar to the nine maidens in "The Spoils of Annwfn" which is a Welsh poem. In 1911 monks at the Abbey at Glasonbury in Southwest England found a tomb which they believed was King Arthur. Most scholars think it's a hoax. But because of that the village of Glastonbury has been connected to Avalon, and thus to Arthur. [2]

There are tons of Celtic sprituality and Pagan sites with stuff about Glastonbury too.

Glastonbury, the Modern Avalon

Glastonbury is somewhere in the middle, south of Cheddar.

Glastonbury has a tall hill with a striking old tower called the Glastonbury Tor. Some people think that Glastonbury was a prehistoric center of Goddess Worship, some say it was a Druid's university. There is a very popular legent that Joseph of Arimathea (a prominent student of Jesus who funded much of the very early church) left Jerusalem and established the first Christian Church in the British Isles. Once he got there he thrust his staff in the groung and it became "The Holy Thorn" which is this weird thorn bush. Because all of the English myths eventually melded together. There are grail rumors, Arthur rumers. Good times. Because of all this Glastonbury has become a center for nature-based religions, especially Celtic-revival religions.

The Abbey today is all runined, you can see in my pics. That is because when King Henry VIII created the Church of England and took over the Catholic Churches, Glastonbury Abbey did not survive.

Glastonbury is pretty cool, there are lots of weird hippie, witchcraft stores. There are lots of non-conformist weirdos, and is a bit of a counter-culture mecca. Every year they have a music festival that is famous (infamous) for hippies and lots of mud. [3]

I found a really good article. There are lots of sites with, what seemed to be, less than accurate information. But I found a good article. "Arthur and Bridget in Avalon: Celtic Myth, Vernacular Religion and Contemporary Sprituality in Glastonbury" by Marion Bowman. I found it on proquest.

Let's see, two summers ago, I went to Ireland and made a detour through Glastonbury, cause I'm a fantasy dork.
